The Commerce Shift · Week of July 28 – August 3, 2026

The long tail gets serious

A specialty retailer stands up its own network, the in-store layer starts consolidating, and private equity circles the biggest independent in ad tech.

Compiled retrospectively as part of the launch archive — sourced from reporting published during the week covered.

New Networks

Academy Sports stands up its own retail media network

Academy Sports + Outdoors launched Academy Retail Media (ARM) on July 30, opening its shopper base to brand advertisers: 320+ stores across 21 states, 52 million verified customers, and activation across onsite, in-app, and off-site channels with closed-loop measurement tying media exposure to online and in-store sales.

The read: for mid-size specialty retailers, an RMN has moved from experiment to table stakes. The hard part comes after the press release — differentiating audience quality and measurement credibility against networks with ten times the scale.

In-Store Media

The in-store layer starts consolidating

Vusion signed an agreement to acquire In-Store Media (announced July 27), building out a digital in-store retail media platform, while Circle K kept scaling its Full Circle network and named a new director of retail media for its convenience-store footprint.

The read: the physical store is retail media's next inventory frontier, and the infrastructure layer is consolidating before the ad dollars fully arrive. Retailers that wait risk renting their own aisles back from whoever owns the screens.

Ad Tech M&A

Private equity circles Criteo

Reported takeover interest in Criteo — with Vista Equity and Quinti Capital named and a premium north of 50% floated — continued to hang over the market, reinforcing private equity's appetite for ad tech at today's compressed multiples.

The read: PE sees durable cash flows where public markets see a challenged story. Whoever ends up owning Criteo also inherits retail media's defining vendor question — what do retailers still need a third party for?
